Computer software for cosmetic formulation

Creativity is a program specially written for the cosmetics formulator. Creativity was designed by a consultant cosmetic chemist and written by a computer programmer with experience in the cosmetic and FMCG industry. This has resulted in a unique programme for the rapid creation of formulations and a wide range of essential reports including batch sheets, mixing instructions, costs and INCI Listing in descending order of concentration. All information is stored in data files that include over 7,000+ cosmetic ingredients identified by their INCI names with CAS and EINICS Numbers; 13,000+ materials are identified by INCI name, trade name and supplier and there are full address listings for more than 3,000 suppliers and their world-wide distributors.

Creating a Formulation: On the Formula Creation Screen materials are entered by typing their code, or by clicking on the item from a drop down menu with the mouse. A feature of the programme is the way it searches across every field for key attributes; thus if a chemist is looking for all emulsifiers with an HLB value between 1.0 and 6.0 it will almost instantly list these on the screen. Selection is by a simple mouse click and all the essential information attached to that material is now available for subsequent reports. As each material is selected it is automatically entered into the formulation. When initial selection is complete the order of addition is entered plus the quantity required. As this is done the balance remaining is shown as a percentage, this usually becomes the water to 100%. If material prices are in the Database the formula is continuously costed. Mixing Instructions and Specification details may be entered and where a similar series is required successive formulations may be copied and edited.

The Reports: The reporting functions are unique to Creativity™ and include many raw material reports which may be selected by INCI Name, Trade Name, Supplier or Function and EC Restrictions are listed where applicable. Suppliers' world wide Distributors and Distributors' Suppliers may also be found. Once a formulation has been created on the screen a series of useful reports become readily available including: -

  • Batch Sheet extended by batch size, complete with mixing instructions

  • Product stability testing forms showing tests required and current specification

  • Formulation cost showing full details

  • Formula with trade name, supplier and INCI name in various formats and styles

  • Material report for each material in a formulation giving full details including any restrictions applicable under the EC Cosmetics Directive

  • INCI listing in descending order of concentration in various formats and styles

  • Labels for the laboratory samples

  • Product & Material Specifications

  • Product & Material Safety Assessments

  • Batch Test Form

  • A "Where Used" facility so every formulation containing a particular material may be instantly identified

  • Project Summary and Status report

Although initially designed for laboratory use the Manufacturing Conversion Module makes Creativity™ invaluable in a manufacturing environment; its ability to print a selection of batch sheets extended by quantity required, of product test forms showing tests required, a material requirements plan and a costing of each formulation being particularly useful. The Finished Product Module prints job sheets and packaging component picking lists and can readily be related to stock control. Any changes to the database, such as material prices or a change in supplier, automatically update the next print out while the Job Planning & Costing Module is a vital tool for production managers and accountants.
